“UK Introduces Shocking Images to Deter Channel Crossings”

In an effort to dissuade migrants from attempting to cross the Channel in small boats, distressing images of wrecked dinghies and individuals struggling in frigid waters will be presented to them.

Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, has approved the use of graphic pictures typically not seen in promotional campaigns, which will be displayed to asylum seekers in France.

A newly designed brochure includes an image of an asylum seeker fighting to stay afloat, accompanied by the message: “Don’t waste your money. Don’t risk your life. Don’t cross the Channel.”

Another leaflet warns: “People are crushed and trampled to death in these overcrowded boats. Many children have perished in this manner. By boarding a boat, you may inadvertently cause harm to someone else – potentially a child.”

Preparation is underway by the Home Secretary to introduce extensive changes to the immigration and asylum system next week with the aim of reducing incentives for individuals to come to the UK and facilitating the deportation of illegal migrants.

It is anticipated that Ms. Mahmood will draw inspiration for some of her reforms from Denmark’s stringent system, which enforces stricter regulations on family reunification and permits most refugees only temporary stays.

This initiative comes as the government faces a challenging task of reducing the number of individuals embarking on the hazardous Channel crossing to the UK in fragile vessels.

As of October 21, a total of 36,734 migrants had arrived in small boats in 2025, marking the second-highest figure since 2022.

To date, 94 individuals have been repatriated to France under a ‘one in one out’ trial program established in July. However, two migrants who were returned under the scheme reentered the UK and had to be reapprehended.

Efforts by the UK are focused on discouraging individuals from making the journey from France by highlighting the risks of attempting the Channel crossing in overcrowded and often unseaworthy vessels.

Since 2019, over 160 people have lost their lives in the attempt to make this perilous crossing.

Unscrupulous human traffickers are increasingly packing more individuals into fewer boats, resulting in passengers being trampled and crushed.

The average number of passengers per boat rose to 56 in the year leading up to June, up from 51 the previous year.

Alex Norris, the Border Security Minister, emphasized: “Anyone attempting to enter the UK illegally must face the stark reality: crossing in a small boat may result in you and your family perishing
