An abusive spouse who fatally attacked his wife with a knife while their children were asleep has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years. Mompati Dodo Isaacs brutally murdered 33-year-old Keotshepile Naso Isaacs in their North Berwick home on January 1, 2024. The 39-year-old repeatedly stabbed his wife in the head and neck during the New Year’s Day assault.
After a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, Isaacs was convicted of the murder in September and received his sentencing on Friday. Judge Lady Ross condemned his actions, stating that Isaacs ended Naso’s life with vicious and sustained violence. The judge highlighted the heinous nature of the attack, emphasizing that Isaacs used a kitchen knife to fatally wound his defenseless wife.
Lady Ross noted that the couple had moved to Scotland from Botswana several years ago, and Ms. Isaacs held a significant job as a support worker and carer. She also highlighted the devastating impact of Naso’s murder on her young children and extended family, causing immeasurable loss and grief.
During the trial, Isaacs claimed his actions were triggered by his wife’s behavior and mental health issues, attempting to argue diminished responsibility. However, the jury rejected his defense, finding him guilty of murder. The judge sentenced Isaacs to life imprisonment, acknowledging the profound effects of his actions on his family and emphasizing his need for remorse.
Isaacs appeared at the hearing via videolink from prison, displaying a somber demeanor throughout. His lawyer expressed Isaacs’s deep regret and acknowledgment of the harm caused to his loved ones.
