A Member of Parliament from the Labour Party has expressed willingness to vacate his seat for Andy Burnham to make a return to the Commons.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester has been frequently linked with a comeback to Westminster. At the Labour party conference, he declined to confirm whether his aspirations involved becoming Prime Minister or Labour leader.
In a recent statement, Mr. Lewis, who previously suggested the Prime Minister should step down, emphasized prioritizing the party over personal ambitions when discussing potential successors to Keir Starmer.
During an appearance on Politics Live on BBC Two, the Norwich South MP highlighted concerns about the democratic legitimacy of a new leader following Boris Johnson’s tenure. He expressed the challenges faced by the party and the complexity of the current political landscape.
When asked if he would step aside for Andy Burnham, Mr. Lewis indicated a willingness to do so, citing the importance of putting the country and party before personal interests.
Previously, Mr. Lewis had advocated for Mr. Burnham to rejoin the Labour Party and assume the role of Prime Minister. He criticized the ongoing situation with the Prime Minister and emphasized the need for a resolution.
In response to Mr. Lewis’s offer, Health Secretary Wes Streeting referred to it as “peculiar” and emphasized the importance of having the best individuals in key roles. He highlighted the need for Andy Burnham to make his own decisions regarding his political future. Streeting cautioned against taking voters for granted and urged a focus on serving constituents effectively.
