This statement comes in response to Kemi Badenoch’s pledge to revoke the UK Government’s climate commitments and Nigel Farage’s vow to eliminate net zero targets and associated subsidies. Addressing the international summit, the PM highlighted the shift in consensus within Britain, emphasizing the importance of seizing the opportunities presented by the green revolution.
He questioned the stance of those advocating for delayed action on climate change, stressing the urgency of addressing energy security, rising costs, and the need to capitalize on green employment and investment prospects. Emphasizing the repercussions of inaction, he pointed to recent natural disasters like hurricane Melissa, underscoring the devastating impact on communities.
Furthermore, the Labour Party pushed back against criticism from Ms. Badenoch, defending the PM’s presence at COP as a demonstration of UK leadership on the global stage and a catalyst for job creation. Amid growing concerns about the climate crisis, recent polling by ActionAid UK revealed that a majority of voters fear its impact on future generations.
Despite these apprehensions, the survey found that only a small percentage of working individuals are worried about the effect of climate change on their current jobs. Zahra Hdidou, Senior Climate and Resilience Advisor at ActionAid UK, emphasized the necessity for politicians to take decisive action to reduce carbon emissions and provide support to vulnerable countries and communities affected by climate change.
