A former Alaska Airlines pilot, Joseph David Emerson, was sentenced this week by U.S. District Judge Amy Baggio in Portland, Oregon. Emerson, aged 46, made a confession to police regarding an incident that occurred on October 22, 2023, aboard Horizon Air Flight 2059. He was traveling off-duty in the cockpit when he attempted to cut the engines by pulling down two red fire suppression handles.
Federal prosecutors revealed that Emerson’s actions were intercepted by on-duty pilots and crew members, preventing a potential disaster. The plane safely diverted to Portland with 84 passengers on board. Emerson spent 46 days in jail before being released pending trial in December 2023.
Emerson explained to authorities that he was grieving the loss of a friend, had been sleep-deprived for nearly two days, and had consumed psychedelic mushrooms earlier. He believed he was dreaming and was trying to wake himself up from what he perceived as a surreal situation.
During court proceedings, Emerson expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the impact on others. He credited the flight crew for saving lives and described the incident as a transformative experience that led him to address his mental health issues and alcohol dependency.
After pleading guilty to federal charges and no-contest to state charges in September 2024, Emerson faced sentencing where he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to grow from the ordeal. His wife, Sarah Stretch, also spoke at the hearing, highlighting the positive changes Emerson had undergone since the incident.
In a tearful moment after the sentencing, Emerson hugged his attorneys and shared an emotional embrace with his wife. The court session featured several individuals speaking on Emerson’s behalf, emphasizing his courage, strength, and resilience in response to the challenges he faced.
