In society, we have grown accustomed to viewing certain living conditions as ordinary, even though they are far from acceptable. Children raised in cramped quarters with their siblings, having meals on beds due to the lack of tables, sharing bathrooms with strangers, and overhearing their parents stress about where they will sleep next month has become distressingly common.
Referred to by some as a housing crisis, the situation is not a sudden event but rather a long-standing failure that has been allowed to persist openly. Having personally visited these environments and met the affected families, I have witnessed firsthand the mold encroaching on walls, families living out of bags, enduring constant leaks, lacking basic furniture, and children expressing embarrassment about their living conditions to the extent of not wanting to invite friends over.
Each time I hear their experiences, one question echoes in my mind: How did we let things deteriorate to this extent? Blaming stretched systems, councils, governments, or budget constraints is not sufficient because behind every justification lies a child who will wake up amidst homelessness this Christmas. While the nation revels in festive joy, thousands of young individuals will find themselves waking up in inadequate temporary accommodations like converted offices, bed and breakfasts, hostels, and flats meant to be temporary but far from it.
In response to this urgent need, I initiated the GoFundMe campaign “172,000 Reasons to Give” to ensure that children facing homelessness are not overlooked during the season of giving. Through this initiative, every pound donated, minus transaction fees, goes directly to children in need through gift cards. This approach allows parents to choose personalized and meaningful gifts for their children without bureaucratic delays, offering direct assistance.
Collaborating with schools in high homelessness areas, I ensure that the aid reaches families requiring it the most. A modest donation of 30 pounds buys a significant gift for a child living in temporary housing, conveying a message of care and inclusion during the festive period.
Beyond material gifts, this campaign aims to shed light on the issue and challenge the normalization of unacceptable living conditions. If we cannot guarantee every child a secure and stable home, the least we can do is remind them of their importance and value.
For those willing to contribute, supporting or sharing the campaign can make a tangible impact. With 172,000 compelling reasons to take action, even a single act can initiate positive change.
