Geoff Burrow, the father of the late rugby league legend Rob Burrow, has passed away. Geoff played a crucial role in the awareness-raising and fundraising efforts that followed Rob’s diagnosis of motor neurone disease.
The Leeds Rhinos expressed their sorrow in a statement, announcing Geoff Burrow’s passing on March 30th after a period of illness. Born in Leeds, Geoff tirelessly supported the MND community since Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019 and continued his advocacy work even after Rob’s passing in June 2024.
Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to rugby at Headingley, sparking his love for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed the voiceless.
The club extended its deepest condolences to Geoff’s wife Irene and the entire Burrow family, requesting privacy during this difficult time. Leeds legend Rob Burrow, who battled MND until his passing in June 2024, was supported by his family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, who undertook remarkable physical challenges to raise funds.
Their collective efforts led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. Geoff expressed gratitude for the support received, emphasizing its impact on MND patients, families, and the dedicated hospital staff.
Geoff played a significant role in caring for Rob and their children, allowing Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue her work as an NHS physiotherapist. He ensured Rob’s final moments were peaceful and free of suffering, reflecting on the heartfelt interactions shared during that time.
Messages of love and support poured in from various rugby teams, including Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens, as the rugby community mourned Geoff’s passing. May he rest in peace, remembered for his unwavering dedication and love for his family and the MND community.
