“Drivers Urged to Stay Calm as Oil Prices Surge”

Drivers are being advised to stay calm despite the surge in oil prices crossing the $100 per barrel mark. Brent crude hit almost $120 on Monday, reaching levels unseen since the summer of 2022.

Considering that oil is a key element in producing petrol and diesel, the uptick in oil prices directly impacts what consumers pay at the fuel pumps. The RAC reported that the average diesel price surpassed 150p per liter over the weekend, hitting 150.97p on Sunday, while unleaded petrol averaged 137.51p per liter on the same day.

AA President, Edmund King, reassured that significant fuel price spikes won’t occur suddenly. This delay is due to fuel being purchased at previous rates, meaning any effects of rising oil prices may take time to reflect in pump prices.

In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to compare fuel prices in their area to find the best deals. King suggested maintaining regular refueling habits but potentially reducing non-essential trips and adjusting driving habits to conserve fuel, especially with warmer weather aiding in maximizing fuel efficiency.

For real-time updates on petrol and diesel prices nearby, the free online tool Petrol Prices allows users to enter their postcode for current rates. Additionally, the RAC provides national average fuel prices, including breakdowns for supermarkets and motorway stations.

The UK government recently introduced a “fuel finder” system, requiring all filling stations to report any price changes within 30 minutes. This data is publicly available, enabling apps, websites, and car navigation systems to display current and comparable prices. The Competition and Markets Authority has pledged to take action against retailers failing to comply with this scheme.

To save on fuel costs, drivers can avoid pricey motorway service stations and plan refueling stops strategically. Regular car maintenance is also crucial to ensure optimal fuel efficiency.
