Lando Norris secured his place in history as the 11th British driver to claim the Drivers’ Championship title by finishing third at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Heading into the race weekend, Norris held a 12-point lead over Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, with his teammate Oscar Piastri also in contention just four points behind Verstappen.
Despite missing out on a chance to clinch the championship in Qatar due to a strategic error by McLaren, Norris faced immense pressure going into the Abu Dhabi race. The scenario was clear: a podium finish would crown him world champion. Qualifying saw Norris edge out Piastri for second place on the grid, behind Verstappen who claimed pole position.
In the race, Norris had a solid start but was overtaken by Piastri early on. He then had to fend off pressure from Charles Leclerc as Ferrari showed strong race pace. Norris made a strategic pit stop to avoid being undercut by rivals behind him, rejoining the race ahead of Leclerc after some decisive overtaking maneuvers.
A controversial move by Tsunoda led to a penalty, aiding Norris’s progress. As the race unfolded, Norris extended his lead over Leclerc while Piastri opted for a longer stint on his hard tires. McLaren played it safe with their strategy, reacting promptly to ensure Norris stayed ahead.
With Leclerc closing in towards the end, Norris managed his tire wear effectively to maintain his lead. As he crossed the finish line, a seven-year journey in Formula 1 culminated in Norris becoming the new champion, bringing British motorsport back to the forefront.
