Angelina Jolie’s driver-bodyguard has revealed that he has been compelled to participate in the conflict in Ukraine after being detained while accompanying the film star. Dmytro Pyshchikov, aged 33, was stopped at a checkpoint during his role as a guide for the Hollywood actress on November 5 in the war-torn nation. Despite claiming exemption from military service due to a spinal condition, Pyshchikov has now disclosed that he has been directed to a military training center before deployment to the front lines.
Jolie was in Ukraine with the Legacy of War Foundation, a UK-based charity established by photographer Giles Duley, 54, who has lost three limbs. Ukrainian ground forces confirmed Pyshchikov’s role as the driver for Jolie during her visit, stating that neither Jolie nor her team interfered with military or civil operations, contrary to online speculation.
Pyshchikov, now 33, has announced his intention to undergo training and serve in the military following his time at the Territorial Recruitment Centre. Assuring his supporters in a post-release video, he reassured them that he was safe and had not evaded authorities.
Amid Russia’s aggression, Ukraine is under pressure to enlist individuals for defense purposes, with Pyshchikov expressing frustration at his exemption being disregarded. Jolie, during her visit, commended the resilience of the people in Mykolaiv and Kherson, emphasizing their perseverance despite ongoing dangers and the desire for peace and security.
As Jolie departed, she was recognized by Ukrainian border guards for her support, receiving national symbols and the emblem of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine as a token of appreciation.
