Newfoundland and Labrador’s government is inviting public feedback on proposed road safety regulations in response to the increasing popularity of e-scooters and e-bikes. Government Services Minister Mike Goosney emphasized the need for legislation to keep pace with technological advancements to prevent potential incidents. Concerns raised by parents in Labrador west regarding the safety of these motorized vehicles on the road have prompted calls for regulations to ensure safer operation and usage. The lack of safety measures such as helmet usage and proper road etiquette by riders has been highlighted as a major concern.
Parents Jackie Granter and Kesha Morgan have observed an uptick in e-scooter usage but expressed worries about the lack of safety precautions being taken by riders. Granter mentioned instances of reckless driving behavior by scooter riders, while Morgan emphasized the need for safety instructions and awareness before operating these vehicles. Both parents are supportive of the government’s efforts to amend the Highway Traffic Act to introduce regulations for e-bikes and e-scooters.
An online survey has been made available for public input on potential safety requirements, including age restrictions, helmet mandates, education programs, and speed limits. The province is also accepting written submissions via email or mail to gather feedback on the proposed regulations. The government aims to implement regulatory changes in the fall and encourages all stakeholders to contribute their suggestions and recommendations.
A recent survey conducted by the Canadian Pediatric Society revealed alarming statistics of e-scooter-related injuries, emphasizing the need for stricter safety measures. Pamela Fuselli from Parachute Canada echoed the concerns, emphasizing that e-scooters are not toys and should be operated with caution, especially by children under 16. Fuselli emphasized the collaborative efforts required from manufacturers, legislators, and enforcement agencies to enhance safety measures and prevent injuries.
Julia Kent from the Canadian Automobile Association Atlantic highlighted the regulatory gaps surrounding micro-mobility vehicles, noting the challenges in keeping pace with the rapid adoption of these motorized devices. She stressed the severity of injuries from e-scooter accidents and the importance of implementing regulations on helmets, speed limits, and usage areas. Kent believes that despite the complexities, introducing effective regulations is essential to mitigate risks associated with e-scooter usage.
