“Man Charged with Vandalism at Saskatoon Synagogue”

A man hailing from Dundurn, Saskatchewan, has been charged with mischief in relation to an act of vandalism at a synagogue in Saskatoon, as reported by city police. The 31-year-old individual faces three counts of mischief under $5,000 for the incident that occurred at the Congregation Agudas Israel synagogue during a prayer service on August 1. Police disclosed that the man threw eggs at various vehicles and parts of the building.

After public tips aided in identifying the suspect, arrangements were made for him to voluntarily surrender at the police headquarters on Thursday, according to a news release issued by the police on Friday. Following his surrender, he was released on conditions pending his initial court appearance. While the Saskatoon police hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation, the suspect has not been charged with any hate crimes, clarified the release.

Superintendent James Oliver highlighted that in Canada, ‘hate crime’ is a term used broadly and not a specific charge under the Criminal Code. Although the suspect is not facing hate crime charges, any indication that an offense was motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate is considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.

The Criminal Code does specify a subsection concerning hate-motivated mischief towards buildings primarily used for religious worship, including churches, mosques, synagogues, or temples. A police spokesperson mentioned in an email to CBC News that the charges laid were based on available evidence at the time, with the possibility of amendments by the prosecution if further evidence supports it.

Rabbi Claudio Jodorkovsky expressed concerns about the vandalism occurring in broad daylight, emphasizing the importance of caution while maintaining trust in Saskatoon as a safe place for the Jewish community. Statistics Canada reported that in 2024, 70 percent of police-reported hate crimes targeting religious groups were aimed at the Jewish community.
