“Embracing Unconventional Success: A Journey of Renewal”

Growing up, I was raised with a conventional roadmap to success: pursue higher education, secure a job in your field, start a family, purchase a home, and raise children. This trajectory was ingrained in me by my parents, who had also been taught the same principles. Following the advice of the high school guidance counselor, I was progressing along this path in 2016 as I completed my second year in biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph.

After facing rejections from engineering job applications in Ontario, I unexpectedly landed a position at a horseback trail riding establishment in Banff National Park. While this opportunity diverged from my anticipated success route, my childhood experiences on our family farm in southern Ontario equipped me with the skills to excel in this role.

In Banff, I delighted in exploring the rugged Rockies on horseback, fulfilling my childhood aspiration of riding in the mountains. Guiding guests through pine forests, driving horse teams along the Bow River, and leading visitors to picturesque wildflower meadows enriched my perspective on a fulfilling life beyond traditional office work and corporate advancement.

Engaging in seasonal work introduced me to remarkable individuals who significantly influenced my perception of a fulfilling life. I encountered individuals in their late twenties taking career breaks, international travelers funding their journeys through seasonal jobs, and full-time seasonal workers alternating between summer and winter roles. These friendships, forged during intense shared experiences, hold a special place in my heart, unlike any other relationships formed in school or my current desk job.

Despite the inevitable farewells that come with seasonal work, parting ways with these dear friends after months of camaraderie remains a challenging aspect. However, the profound impact of these relationships reaffirmed that success can manifest in various forms and that surrounding oneself with positive influences is paramount.

My journey led me to embrace a new definition of success, paving the way for a career shift from engineering to international sales. The confidence and problem-solving skills honed during my time as a guide empowered me to pursue this new path, enabling me to continue exploring the world while cherishing the simpler joys of life.

Though my career trajectory diverged from my family’s expectations, they eventually embraced my choices upon witnessing the personal growth and enriching friendships borne out of my seasonal work experiences. Embracing change and following my passions has allowed me to cultivate a life that resonates with me, redefining my understanding of success and fulfillment.

Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the transformational experiences that reshaped my perspective on life and success. Seasonal work taught me the value of exploration, adaptability, and the importance of enjoying the journey, reinforcing the belief that true living lies in embracing new challenges and relishing the moments that shape our lives.
