“Saskatchewan Company Leading Natural Hydrogen Revolution”

A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling for hydrogen and demonstrating the feasibility of extracting it from the ground on a large commercial scale rather than relying on fossil fuel production methods.

Regina-based Max Power Mining recently initiated the drilling of its third well at the Lawson Complex, an underground rock formation in southern Saskatchewan. The company aims to establish the world’s first extensive commercial natural hydrogen system, ushering in a new primary energy source.

According to Chad Levesque, president and director of the company, hydrogen plays a crucial role in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. Natural hydrogen presents an environmentally friendly alternative to sourcing this essential molecule.

Hydrogen, a versatile gas that can serve as a fuel and generate electricity in fuel cells, produces water as its only byproduct and does not emit greenhouse gases directly. Its potential as an energy source is particularly significant in sectors that are challenging to decarbonize, such as transportation and steelmaking.

The majority of commercially available hydrogen is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without carbon capture, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions. In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy, offers lower emissions but is currently less cost-effective than grey hydrogen.

Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, has the advantage of being naturally occurring and requires less energy-intensive processes for extraction. It can be harnessed from underground deposits with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, utilizing existing equipment and techniques used in natural gas extraction.

The extraction of natural hydrogen presents unique challenges compared to traditional oil and gas drilling, requiring specialized techniques and considerations. The natural processes that produce hydrogen underground include serpentinization and the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium, resulting in the formation of hydrogen gas.

While the discovery of natural hydrogen deposits is increasing globally, including in regions like Saskatchewan, northern Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, challenges remain in extracting and commercializing this resource. The exact volume of hydrogen available at these sites and the feasibility of extraction are crucial factors in determining their commercial viability.

Despite the potential of natural hydrogen as a cleaner energy source, further research and development are needed to assess its scalability and impact on decarbonization efforts globally. Ongoing projects in various regions are still in the early stages, and the industry awaits further advancements to determine the viability of natural hydrogen as a significant contributor to reducing carbon emissions.
