An experienced animal trainer tragically lost his life after being attacked by a grizzly bear he had raised since childhood during a failed performance stunt.
Stephan Miller, aged 39, was assisting at his cousin’s animal training facility – Randy Miller’s Predators in Action, located in the San Bernardino mountains near Los Angeles, when the fatal incident occurred.
Engaged in shooting a promotional video with Rocky, a 7.5ft tall bear weighing approximately 50 stone, Stephan, known for his expertise in bear handling and entertainment, was involved due to his prior experience with bears in the film industry.
The grizzly, a five-year-old trained to interact with humans, had previously appeared in a comedy movie where Stephan acted as a body double for a well-known actor. On the day of the incident in 2008, while filming what was intended to be a playful advertisement, Rocky suddenly attacked Stephan by lunging at his neck, catching him off guard and inflicting a fatal bite.
Handlers swiftly intervened using pepper spray to separate Rocky from Stephan, although their efforts were in vain as Stephan succumbed to the injuries within minutes of the attack, leaving behind a wife and two children.
Randy, the owner of the training center with a long history of working with exotic animals, revealed that the bear had been friendly and playful before the unexpected aggression towards Stephan, stating that all safety protocols were in place for the scheduled wrestling performance.
Following the tragedy, authorities initiated investigations into the incident, contemplating the fate of the bear. Despite initial considerations of euthanasia, Rocky was spared after advocacy from animal rights groups and relocated to an animal sanctuary in California. The training center, equipped with necessary permits for filming activities, housed various exotic animals, including bears, snakes, reptiles, big cats, and other wildlife.
Filmmaker Nick Palumbo, a close acquaintance of Stephan and Randy, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing Stephan’s bond with the bear and the tragic turn of events.
In memory of the deceased trainer, the community mourned the loss of a talented individual whose passion for working with animals ended in a devastating incident.
