“Dying Wish Denied: Son Urges Swift Action on Assisted Dying Bill”

A father, Tim Wardle, who was terminally ill and had hoped to travel to Dignitas for a peaceful end due to financial constraints, has passed away. Tim, 86, was a dedicated advocate for Assisted Dying and had been battling cancer for over ten years. His son, Charlie Wardle, shared the heartbreaking account of Tim’s painful final days and is calling on the House of Lords to expedite the Assisted Dying Bill to prevent others from enduring similar suffering.

Charlie emphasized that his father’s sudden deterioration led to immense pain before his passing, underscoring the need for individuals to have control over their end-of-life choices. Tim, residing in Devon, had faced a long battle with various types of cancer, including kidney, bladder, prostate, and lung cancer. He strongly believed in the right to die with dignity and had witnessed the toll of cancer on his family members, including his sister, who passed away before assisted dying was legalized in Canada.

Tim’s unwavering support for assisted dying was evident in his public statements advocating for the option to choose one’s time and place of passing. Despite considering the possibility of seeking assisted death abroad, Tim was adamant that individuals should not be compelled to leave their homes or incur exorbitant expenses for a peaceful death. His son echoed Tim’s sentiments, stressing the importance of passing the Assisted Dying Bill promptly to spare others from a distressing end like his father’s.

Charlie expressed pride in continuing his father’s legacy by supporting the cause of dignified dying. Graham Winyard, Director at My Death, My Decision, lauded Tim’s integrity and dedication to the assisted dying movement, pledging to carry forward his compassionate advocacy. Tim’s legacy, characterized by dignity, justice, and compassion, will endure as a guiding light for the ongoing campaign for end-of-life autonomy.
