“Families Struggle to Navigate AI in Daily Life”

AI’s impact on daily life is growing, posing a challenge for parents to keep pace with the rapid changes. Families are increasingly tasked with guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media interactions to school assignments and even friendships, exemplified by the recent observance of Safer Internet Day.

In the face of the difficulty in discerning reality online, the initiative for 2026, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile – a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, aims to encourage families to engage in open discussions through The Family Chat about smartphones. The goal is to facilitate honest conversations about online safety within the home environment, making the task less intimidating.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11 with her husband Tom, will be leading discussions with parents and children on the challenges they encounter in the digital realm.

The initial family dialogue will focus on AI and the significance of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub in assisting parents with children up to 18 years old. Like many families, the Karleys – consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. However, the parents admit to struggling with understanding AI, which can pose risks to their children’s safety.

Anna candidly shares, “I struggle to identify AI. There have been instances where I thought something was real, only for my kids to point out that it’s AI.” The challenge of distinguishing between real and fake content is acknowledged even by the children, with Joshua noting the prevalence of realistic AI content on platforms like TikTok.

In the current educational landscape, where homework is predominantly completed online with AI-generated research, the Karleys and Giovanna are navigating similar challenges. Giovanna remarks on the shift to computer-based assignments in secondary school and emphasizes the importance of continuously evaluating the use of AI in education.

To ensure children use AI safely, consider these guidelines:

1. **Explore AI Together:** Engage in collaborative activities with AI, such as creating stories or artwork, to discover its capabilities.

2. **AI Isn’t Always Accurate:** Encourage children to fact-check responses generated by AI and question the sources of information.

3. **Verify Age Restrictions and Privacy Settings:** Utilize AI tools suitable for ages 13 and above, and review privacy settings together for a secure online experience.

4. **Discuss Authenticity:** Teach children to discern between real and fabricated content online, fostering digital literacy and confidence.

5. **Use AI as a Tool, Not a Substitute:** While AI can inspire creativity, encourage children to prioritize critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Karleys appreciate having a reliable resource for guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers practical resources and toolkits to assist parents in discussing AI with their children, including age-specific advice on promoting safe AI use, developed in partnership with the UK Safer Internet Centre. Additionally, it provides links to entertaining educational AI quizzes to engage the whole family in conversations.

The Karley family, already proactive in discussing online safety, finds Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub enhances their efforts. Emmanuel expresses, “We can now delve deeper into the topic together, enhancing our support for them.”
