Aldi has once again secured the title of the most budget-friendly supermarket for the month, as per the latest price analysis by Which? The study compared prices of a shopping list containing 89 items in February, revealing that the average cost at Aldi was £161.56 throughout the month.
Lidl followed closely behind, with a marginal difference of £1.19, pricing their list at £162.75. Asda claimed the third spot at £181.06, with Tesco, including a Clubcard, slightly higher at £181.58.
The comprehensive list of 89 items encompassed both branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
On the other hand, Waitrose emerged as the priciest supermarket for a smaller selection of items this month, totaling an average of £217.02, which is £55.46 more expensive than Aldi.
In a separate comparison for a longer list of 225 items, Tesco stood out as the most cost-effective option for Clubcard members, pricing the larger shop at £580.35. This made it cheaper than Asda by £3.97, whose total came to £584.32.
Without a Clubcard, the same shop at Tesco cost £629.25, an additional £48.90. Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their smaller product range.
Waitrose remained the costliest on average, with the larger shop amounting to £650.11, presenting a variance of £69.76 compared to Tesco with a Clubcard.
The analysis conducted by Which? factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable, excluding multibuys.
Reena Sewraz, Retail Editor at Which?, highlighted the competitiveness between Aldi and Lidl in offering budget-friendly choices. She also emphasized Tesco’s solid value through Clubcard benefits and expressed anticipation for broader accessibility to these savings in the future.
In a time of financial strain, the analysis underscores the significant savings achievable by being selective about where one shops, potentially saving hundreds of pounds annually.
