“UK Sniffer Dog Foils 76 Boat Smuggling Attempts”

A sniffer dog from the UK has been instrumental in the interception of 76 illegal boats in a significant anti-smuggling operation. Adele, the dog, is stationed at the border between Bulgaria and Turkey, where she detects contraband that trafficking groups attempt to sneak into Europe. Trained by the National Crime Agency, Adele specializes in identifying the rubber used in people smugglers’ dinghies concealed within trucks.

Collaborating with international partners, the NCA has seized 76 vessels this year, with a recent operation conducted in conjunction with the Home Office, HMRC, Foreign Office officials, and Bulgarian authorities. During a 48-hour period at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, searches of 350 vehicles led to the discovery of several illegal migrants.

Can Gunal, an NCA international liaison officer, emphasized Adele’s crucial role in combating people smuggling networks at the Bulgarian border. Adele has not only detected equipment for perilous channel crossings but also unearthed other illicit items and illicit cash.

Julie Roper, leading the NCA operation, highlighted the life-saving impact of intercepting these boats, preventing potential drownings for individuals attempting dangerous crossings. Among the notorious figures exploiting smuggling routes is Hewa Rahimpur, sentenced to 11 years in Belgium for leading a significant human trafficking ring specializing in English Channel crossings.

Rahimpur’s criminal activities extended to setting up a barber shop in London to serve as a front for his operations, sourcing boats, engines, and life jackets for migrant transportation. UK authorities, through forensic investigations on seized boats, have intensified efforts to dismantle criminal groups like Rahimpur’s. Operations have also targeted other forms of smuggling, such as drugs, illegal tobacco, counterfeit goods, and cash.

The collaboration with Bulgaria and other international partners plays a crucial role in disrupting organized immigration crime and enhancing border security. Philip Nikolov of the Bulgarian Border Customs Police emphasized the importance of joint efforts in combating cross-border smuggling and crime to create a safer Europe and UK.

The ongoing partnership has yielded tangible results, including saved lives, cleaner business environments, and a more humane society.
