Tommie Jakes, a well-liked and courteous young apprentice jockey, tragically passed away at his residence near Newmarket. His colleague from the weighing room described him as being in a difficult situation. Jakes, who had achieved success with 59 wins in three Flat racing seasons, was discovered deceased after his final race at Nottingham Racecourse.

The Suffolk Police confirmed the incident, stating that they were notified of the sudden death of a man in Freckenham early in the morning. The authorities ruled out any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and are preparing a report for the coroner.

Numerous heartfelt tributes have poured in for Jakes, with racecourses honoring him with a minute of silence and jockeys wearing black armbands in his memory.

Reflecting on Jakes’ passing, Hector Crouch shared his thoughts during an interview at Newmarket. He remembered Jakes as a hardworking individual who was passionate about racing despite facing challenges with his weight. Crouch expressed sadness over the loss and highlighted the sense of community within the weighing room.

Crouch also mentioned the absence of saunas in weighing rooms due to the pandemic, noting that this change has affected the camaraderie among jockeys.
