Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is set to provide financial support to ensure the World Snooker Championship remains at The Crucible as the venue’s contract is close to expiration. The local council is eager to retain the event, although Barry Hearn, the president of Matchroom Sport, has hinted at the possibility of exploring alternative venues.
The government has intervened by pledging funding, with Starmer visiting The Crucible last month to discuss the tournament’s future with council officials and local partners. A source from The Sheffield Star revealed that negotiations are progressing rapidly following the Prime Minister’s involvement, indicating a positive outlook for the city, sport, and arts.
The Crucible has been the prestigious host of the Snooker World Championships since 1977, but uncertainties have arisen due to the contractual situation. Hearn has raised the prospect of Saudi Arabia hosting the tournament if his request for £1 million in prize money is not met, emphasizing the importance of government support in maintaining the event in the UK and specifically in Sheffield.
The 2026 World Snooker Championship is scheduled to kick off on April 18 and run until May 4, with Chinese player Zhao Xintong defending the title after defeating Mark Williams in last year’s final. This development comes alongside the launch of England and Nike’s new kits for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, offering free delivery on all orders with the code DEAL.
