“HMS Seahorse Tragically Dies at Cheltenham Festival”

Cheltenham Festival competitor HMS Seahorse tragically passed away following a fatal injury during the third race on Wednesday. ITV announced the sad news after a statement was delivered on air confirming the horse’s demise.

The eight-year-old horse, under the training of Paul Nolan, fell at the final hurdle in the 2.40pm BetMGM Cup Handicap Hurdle. Despite efforts from veterinary professionals, HMS Seahorse could not be saved.

HMS Seahorse becomes the second horse casualty at the Festival, with Hansard also tragically succumbing to a fall in the second race on the first day. ITV presenter Ed Chamberlin relayed the news from Cheltenham.

In a statement, it was revealed that the eight-year-old horse received immediate attention from a team of expert veterinarians during the third race but sustained a fatal injury during the fall. Condolences were extended to the connections of the horse.

Horse racing, like other sports, carries inherent risks, but The Jockey Club, organizers of Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals, actively work to minimize risks at their events. The racing industry has invested over £63 million in equine welfare since 2000, focusing on veterinary science, education, and research.

The Horse Welfare Board, chaired independently, has implemented a strategic plan, ‘A Life Well Lived,’ which has shown positive outcomes. Safety measures, such as changing jump markers to white based on equine vision research, implementing padded hurdles, and conducting detailed reviews after any fatality, have contributed to a decline in fallers and fatal injury rates.

Collaboration with leading welfare organizations ensures that the racing industry maintains high standards. National Racehorse Week provides free visits to centers, influencing positive perceptions of horse welfare among visitors.

With five million attendees in 2025, horse racing remains the second most popular sport in the UK after football. Opt for Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News for instant access to valued news content.
