“Retired ‘James Bond’ Aspirant Sentenced to 7 Years for Attempted Russian Espionage”

A 66-year-old retired insolvency worker, Howard Phillips, who aspired to be like James Bond, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to spy for Russia. Phillips, characterized as a ‘fantasist’ by his own lawyer, offered personal information about former Defence Secretary Sir Grant Shapps to what he believed were Russian intelligence service agents named “Sasha” and “Dima.”

In reality, the individuals he thought were Russian agents were undercover British intelligence officers. Phillips was found guilty of aiding a foreign intelligence service under the National Security Act. The judge emphasized that Phillips was driven by money rather than ideology and had taken a significant risk without concern for the consequences.

Described as having narcissistic tendencies and an inflated sense of self-importance, Phillips was informed about the extreme measures Russia takes against its targets. He planned to assist the supposed Russian agents from the end of 2023 to May the following year by providing sensitive information about Sir Grant, including his contact details and the location of his private plane.

In a statement to the court, Sir Grant expressed shock and concern for his family’s safety due to Phillips’ actions, labeling it a breach of trust. Prosecutors revealed that Phillips, motivated by financial gain, offered his loyalty to the undercover British agents posing as Russian operatives and was well aware of Russian intelligence activities in the UK.

While defending his client, Jeremy Dein argued that Phillips had made a grave error in judgment, driven by a desire to boost his ego following personal setbacks. Phillips’ ex-wife revealed his fascination with spy-themed movies and his dream of emulating James Bond. Phillips claimed he contacted the Russian embassy to expose agents to assist Israel, believing the undercover agents were not truly Russian.

Police officials emphasized the severity of working for foreign intelligence services and reassured that such actions would not be tolerated. Security Minister Dan Jarvis stated that those attempting to undermine UK security for personal gain would be thwarted.
