“Football Authorities Consider Expanding VAR Powers”

Football authorities are exploring the possibility of expanding the authority of VAR. Suggestions are being put forward to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to allow video technology to reverse incorrect second yellow cards. Currently, only red cards or cautions due to mistaken identity can be overturned by video match officials under the VAR protocol.

During the Annual Business Meeting in London in January, the IFAB will deliberate on whether VAR should be empowered to intervene in instances like the one involving Santiago Hezze of Olympiacos, who received a second yellow card against Barcelona. Despite calls for VAR assistance when Hezze was sent off for what seemed to be a mistaken decision, VAR was not authorized to intervene in that specific incident.

Increasing VAR’s jurisdiction raises concerns due to its history of high-profile errors. Recent incidents, such as the controversial decisions involving Fulham, Wolves, Chelsea, and Everton players, have highlighted the need for a more precise and consistent VAR system.

The meeting also discussed the success of new regulations to prevent time-wasting by goalkeepers in the Premier League. Additionally, talks are ongoing regarding implementing similar time limits for throw-ins and goal kicks to minimize delays caused by injuries and substitutions.

Furthermore, the meeting acknowledged the positive reception of the “only the captain” guidelines, which aim to enhance interactions between players and referees. It is proposed that these guidelines become a mandatory protocol in the Laws of the Game to promote mutual respect and clarity on the field.

In other news, Sky has reduced the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the upcoming season, offering a substantial discount and an increased number of live matches across various leagues. Sky plans to broadcast over 200 live Premier League games in the next season, providing fans with an expanded viewing experience.
