Mark Allen Geralds, a convict who was found guilty more than 30 years ago for the murder of a mother, was executed on death row today. Geralds, 58, became the 18th individual to be executed in Florida this year. Before his lethal injection at a jail, Geralds shared his last words, expressing apologies and love to an unnamed person.
During the execution process, Geralds took several deep breaths and experienced physical movements before becoming motionless within minutes. The crime for which Geralds was executed occurred over 36 years ago when he killed Tressa Pettibone in her residence, discovered by her young son upon returning from school.
Following the execution at Florida State Prison near Starke, a family representative shared a statement on behalf of Pettibone’s family, indicating relief after almost four decades of legal battles for justice. The family remembered Pettibone as a devoted wife, mother, and friend whose life revolved around her family.
Relatives fondly recalled Pettibone’s passion for Christmas, highlighting her elaborate decorations and homemade gifts that are still cherished by the family. Geralds, a carpenter who had prior interactions with Pettibone, was linked to the crime through evidence found in his possession and his suspicious behavior following the murder.
Geralds was convicted of multiple charges, including murder and armed robbery, in 1990. Despite a temporary sentence reversal, he was ultimately resentenced to death in 1992 by the Florida Supreme Court.
