“Keir Starmer hints at scrapping two-child benefit limit”

Keir Starmer has strongly hinted at the potential removal of the two-child benefit limit during the upcoming Budget announcement. The Prime Minister expressed his personal commitment to reducing child poverty levels, currently affecting around 4.5 million children. He assured the public that a series of measures will be introduced to address this critical issue when the Chancellor presents the Budget on November 26.

The discussion around abolishing the two-child benefit limit intensified after Rachel Reeves indicated support for its removal. During an interview on ITV’s Lorraine program, Mr. Starmer emphasized his determination to decrease child poverty, drawing upon the successful efforts of the previous Labour government. He highlighted existing initiatives like free school meals, breakfast clubs, and free childcare, while emphasizing the need for additional actions to combat child poverty effectively.

Regarding the specific issue of the two-child benefit limit, Mr. Starmer emphasized that significant measures would be implemented to achieve the goal of reducing child poverty. The government, under Mr. Starmer’s leadership, has been reviewing the policy introduced by the Conservatives in 2017, with considerations including potentially transitioning to a three-child benefit limit.

Rachel Reeves advocated for the full abolition of the two-child benefit limit, aligning with former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s stance. She emphasized the unfairness of penalizing children in larger families and pledged to reduce the number of children living in poverty.

The Chancellor, in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, underscored the economic importance of addressing child poverty. She stressed that children should not suffer due to their parents’ financial constraints, highlighting various circumstances that could lead families to face difficulties. The commitment to combat child poverty was reiterated, drawing parallels with the achievements of the previous Labour government.

A source from the Treasury indicated that the statements made by government officials signify a clear intent to address child poverty effectively.
