A woman from the UK visiting Turkey for breast implant surgery has turned to social media, asking for prayers after experiencing a frightening earthquake. Identified as Courtney on TikTok under the handle @keepingupwithcourts, she shared a video following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the Balikesir region. Expressing her distress, she mentioned the intense thunder and lightning, stating it was her first encounter with such a natural disaster.
The quake caused buildings to collapse in Sindirgi, leading to multiple injuries and widespread panic. The tremors were felt in Istanbul, over 200 miles away from the epicenter. Courtney mentioned in her video that a friend informed her of a previous 6.1 magnitude earthquake that resulted in fatalities and building destruction, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Describing the chaotic aftermath, Courtney highlighted the adverse weather conditions hindering any outdoor movement, including strong winds, heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. She expressed concern about their safety and the challenges they might face while trying to leave the area, especially with the impending flight back home.
Despite the significant impact of the earthquake, no casualties had been reported, according to local authorities. The community remained on edge, seeking refuge in mosques, schools, and sports halls due to fears of further tremors or building collapses. Turkey, situated on active fault lines, frequently experiences earthquakes, with recent incidents resulting in tragic outcomes.
