An eruption of applause filled Canada Life Centre on Saturday night when Simon Hildebrandt, a Winnipeg resident, made a remarkable three-point shot. This shot secured the Winnipeg Sea Bears their first-ever Canadian Elite Basketball League championship. The victory was sealed with a 98-84 score, accompanied by confetti raining down and the anthem “We Are the Champions” resonating through the speakers as both fans and players rejoiced.
Reflecting on his winning shot, Hildebrandt described the moment as unexpected and surreal, where his mind went blank before the jubilant celebrations began. This triumph marked the fourth season for Winnipeg in the CEBL, and it held a special significance as it honored late player Chad Posthumus, also a Winnipeg native, who scored the game-winning basket in the team’s inaugural game in 2023.
Head coach Mike Raimbault, who leads both the Sea Bears and the University of Winnipeg’s men’s basketball team, shared a touching moment with Posthumus’s parents during the postgame festivities. Raimbault expressed that it was fitting for Hildebrandt to clinch the title, believing that if Posthumus could choose who hit the game-winning shot, he would have selected Simon.
The Sea Bears’ journey to the championship was not without challenges, facing setbacks like the departure of key players and unexpected changes in the playoff format. Despite these hurdles, the team, led by standout guard Xavier Moon, triumphed to claim the CEBL title. Moon’s exceptional performance in the finals, scoring 29 points, earned him the finals MVP title.
The Sea Bears’ victory not only marked a historic moment for the team but also set a new attendance record with 12,519 fans present at Canada Life Centre, surpassing the previous league record. Owner David Asper expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community, emphasizing the significance of the win in uniting fans and showcasing the team’s hard work.
