Vladyslav Heraskevych of Ukraine has been excluded from the Winter Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for not complying with their regulations on athlete attire. Heraskevych, a skeleton racer, brought a customized helmet to the Milano Cortina games adorned with images of 24 Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives in Russia’s invasion.
Despite being informed that the helmet was not permitted, the 27-year-old wore it during a training session. Following unsuccessful pleas to the IOC, Heraskevych was disqualified and had his Olympic accreditation revoked on the grounds of the helmet being deemed a political statement.
Heretofore, Heraskevych expressed that not wearing the helmet would be a betrayal to the athletes it commemorates. He intends to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, stating his feelings of emptiness and emphasizing the importance of dignity.
His father and coach, Mykhailo, present at the venue, was emotional upon receiving the news. The IOC clarified that the disqualification stemmed from Heraskevych’s refusal to adhere to their guidelines on athlete expression.

“Despite extensive discussions with the IOC, including a meeting with IOC president Kirsty Coventry, Heraskevych remained firm in his stance without considering any compromises. The IOC aimed for his participation but could not reach a mutually respectful resolution,” a statement from the IOC read.
Coventry, a Zimbabwean official, traveled to Cortina to engage with Heraskevych directly, emphasizing the importance of face-to-face dialogue in this situation.

Heraskevych, with little time before the event began, called for the lifting of his ban and an apology from the IOC. He emphasized that he did not seek a conflict with the organization, attributing the issue to what he perceives as discriminatory rule interpretation.
Despite the attention brought to fallen Ukrainian athletes, Heraskevych lamented that the controversy overshadowed the sporting event and its participants.
