“UK Considers Tougher Immigration Rules After Denmark Visit”

Shabana Mahmood is poised to reveal a significant overhaul of the United Kingdom’s immigration regulations, drawing inspiration from Denmark’s policies. The Home Secretary reportedly sent officials to Denmark recently to examine its stringent border control and asylum measures, which are renowned for being some of the toughest in Europe.

Denmark’s approach, including stricter regulations on family reunions and limiting certain refugees to temporary residency, is under scrutiny. This strategy has led to a notable decrease in asylum applications to a four-decade low, along with a high success rate of removing 95% of rejected asylum seekers. There is a division among Labour MPs regarding this move, with some endorsing more stringent actions to counter Reform UK, while others fear it may drive voters towards the Greens and Liberal Democrats.

Ms. Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entry into the UK and streamline the process of deporting individuals lacking the right to remain in the country. Reports suggest she is eager to meet with Rasmus Stoklund, Denmark’s immigration minister, in the near future.

Mr. Stoklund has previously likened Danish society to the peaceful hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings,” emphasizing the expectation for newcomers to engage positively and contribute. Stoke-on-Trent Central Labour MP Gareth Snell expressed support for any changes that enhance fairness in an asylum system that his constituents lack trust in, deeming it a worthy exploration.

Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, a member of the party’s Socialist Campaign Group caucus, cautioned against replicating the Danish model, labeling it as “far-right” policies that should not be entertained by a Labour government. Home Office data revealed that 648 migrants arrived in Britain on Friday via nine boats, bringing the year’s total to 38,223 crossings so far.
