“TV Licence Fee Set to Increase to £180”

The BBC licence fee increase is imminent, with confirmation that the annual cost of the TV licence will elevate to £180 starting April 1, as announced by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport.

Currently priced at £174.50 per year, a TV licence is a prerequisite for viewing or recording live TV programs on any platform, including TVs, PCs, laptops, tablets, or phones.

The TV licence is mandatory for watching BBC iPlayer content, whether live or on catch-up, but not necessary for other streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5.

Failure to possess a TV licence while watching live TV through these platforms can lead to a potential £1,000 fine. In 2023/24, the licence fee contributed to 68% of BBC funding, with the total BBC income for the same period amounting to £5.39 billion.

Individuals aged 75 and over who claim Pension Credit are eligible for a free TV licence.

Students residing away from home may be covered if their parents hold a TV licence, provided they watch TV on devices like phones, tablets, or laptops but not on televisions or desktop computers connected to the mains.

Those with visual impairments can receive a 50% discount on their TV licence, while individuals in residential care or sheltered accommodation can apply for a concessionary TV licence costing £7.50 per room, flat, or bungalow, subject to eligibility criteria.

Traditionally, the TV licence fee increases annually in April based on the previous September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate. The latest adjustment sets the TV licence fee at £180 effective from April 1 following a confirmed 3.8% inflation rate in September.

Post the rise, the annual cost of a color TV licence will increase by £5.50, equivalent to an additional 46p per month.
