Syrians have demonstrated this week demanding justice following the passing of Mohammad Ghamira, a Syrian man who died in a hospital after alleged mistreatment by security forces while in custody. This incident occurred less than two years after the current government pledged to end the prevalent arbitrary detentions and abuse that characterized the previous regime.
Family members of Ghamira informed the authorities that the 29-year-old, who was a father of two, suffered from hemophilia, a genetic disorder affecting blood clotting. He was detained for three days before being released on August 9 and immediately taken to the hospital, where he passed away a week later.
The death of Ghamira serves as a crucial test for the new Syrian government to demonstrate accountability post the fall of the long-standing Assad regime. His demise led to peaceful demonstrations across the country, shedding light on numerous reported cases of mistreatment at detention facilities since the new administration assumed power.
Fadel Abdulghany, the Executive Director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, emphasized the need for a systemic approach to accountability in cases like Ghamira’s, urging for a transparent investigation.
Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, was detained on suspicion of theft, as reported by the Latakia Internal Security Command. Despite his family’s warnings about his hemophilia condition, Ghamira was allegedly subjected to physical abuse while in custody.
Following his release, Ghamira tragically passed away at Latakia University Hospital. The Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management mourned his death, attributing it to injuries sustained during detention.
An investigation into Ghamira’s death has been initiated by the Syrian Interior Ministry, leading to the detention of seven personnel for questioning. The head of the investigative committee revealed that a police interrogator had struck Ghamira during questioning, resulting in fatal complications.
While the government has promised accountability in this case, rights groups assert that abuses persist in detention centers. Organizations like Syrians for Truth and Justice have highlighted ongoing torture, beatings, and deaths in custody, calling for comprehensive reforms to prevent such atrocities in the future.
The United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic has also documented cases of torture and ill-treatment in various official and makeshift detention facilities, underscoring the need for justice and reform in Syria’s post-conflict landscape.
