“Kayla Alexander Leads Canada to Victory in FIBA Tournament”

Kayla Alexander led Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team with 16 points and seven rebounds in their successful start at the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb contributed 13 points each to secure a 72-57 victory over Senegal.

Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of beginning the tournament with a win. The Canadians displayed resilience and strong rebounding skills, especially on the offensive end, where they outperformed Senegal 15-8. Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds were crucial in creating additional scoring opportunities for Canada.

Swords made an early impact by sinking three three-pointers in the first quarter, setting the tone for Canada’s dominant play. Despite Senegal’s comeback attempt in the third quarter, Canada maintained control throughout the game. They excelled in the paint, outscoring Senegal 26-14 and shooting 52.5% from that area. Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers, with Senegal narrowly leading in bench scoring at 31-29.

Canada will enjoy a rest day before their next match against the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
