“Roommates Discover Unwanted Basement Dweller”

When ten roommates were startled by strange noises emanating from their basement, they initially suspected a haunting but soon uncovered a more unsettling truth.

In addition to the eerie sounds and alarms, the housemates discovered open drawers in various parts of the house and lights inexplicably left on in unoccupied rooms.

Driven by curiosity and fear, they traced the noises to the basement, where they encountered a locked door. One roommate, Mark Hartman, recounted how his friend Brett had repeatedly heard noises in the basement but could never access the locked door.

During a subsequent investigation in the basement, Brett was startled to encounter an unknown man. Brett, visibly shaken, tried to engage the man, identified as Jeremy, in conversation, but Jeremy remained evasive and exited the house without explanation.

With the assistance of law enforcement, the group managed to break open the door, revealing a fully furnished bedroom complete with personal belongings, photos, books, a television, and clothing.

The students from Ohio State University were shocked to realize that Jeremy had been residing in their basement without permission, using a side entrance to evade detection. It was later revealed that Jeremy’s cousin had previously lived in the same house, providing him with access.

The unsettling discovery occurred in Columbus, Ohio, in 2013. The leasing company, NorthSteppe Reality, promptly changed the locks following Jeremy’s discovery, but the students expressed concerns over the company’s oversight in detecting the unauthorized occupant.

A note was left by the landlord for Jeremy to contact them, which he did later that evening before vacating the premises. Jeremy had been utilizing a basement bathroom and sink for his needs, although the students believed he had not accessed their food or personal rooms.

Mark highlighted the security lapse, noting that the keys were not labeled as non-duplicable, potentially granting numerous individuals access to the property. The students sought discounted rent and legal advice in response to the incident.

Despite the alarming situation, Jeremy was described as a “nice enough guy” by another roommate, Jimmy Alderman, who acknowledged the potential dangers of the situation and the fortunate outcome.
