A man identified as Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a convicted sex offender, was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth in London on October 29. Kaddour-Cherif, 24, was serving time for trespass with intent to steal and has a history of sexual offenses. The Metropolitan Police are actively searching for him to return him to custody.
Recently, another convicted sex offender, Hadush Kebatu, 38, was erroneously released from HMP Chelmsford in Essex. Kebatu, an Ethiopian national, was apprehended in a north London park after spending three days at large. He was serving a 12-month sentence for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a woman in Essex.
After Kebatu’s capture, Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed his deportation and emphasized the need to prevent such incidents in the future. These incidents follow a previous escape in 2023 when Daniel Khalife fled HMP Wandsworth by attaching himself to a food delivery van. Khalife was recaptured three days later in west London.
Reacting to the recent releases, David Lammy expressed outrage at the mistaken release of these criminals and emphasized the need for better protection for victims. He has initiated a thorough investigation led by Dame Lynne Owens to identify and address the systemic failures that have led to these incidents.
