Labour Minister Peter Kyle has strongly criticized Nigel Farage, alleging that Reform UK has ties to Russia and accusing Farage of being inconsistent in his statements. The Business Secretary highlighted a concerning pattern within the party, suggesting that Farage has aligned with Vladimir Putin’s views. This criticism comes after a former leader of Reform in Wales, Nathan Gill, was sentenced to over 10 years in prison for accepting Russian bribes.
During an appearance on Sky News, Kyle emphasized the “Russia problem” within Reform UK, pointing out Farage’s past admiration for Putin and his alignment with Russian narratives. Kyle challenged Farage and Reform’s denial of these allegations by pointing to Farage’s history of appearing on Russian TV networks, praising Putin, and downplaying Putin’s controversial decisions.
Gill’s recent conviction for bribery has intensified scrutiny on Farage and the Reform Party. Gill, a former UKIP and Brexit Party MEP, was found guilty of accepting illegal payments from a figure associated with the Russian security services. The judge described Gill’s actions as a betrayal of the public trust, prompting calls for an inquiry into Russian influence within the Reform Party.
Reform UK’s head of policy, Zia Yusuf, sought to distance the party from Gill, labeling his actions as “ancient history” and asserting that they do not reflect the broader party’s values. The ongoing controversy surrounding Farage’s alleged pro-Putin stance has raised concerns about the party’s alignment with Russian interests.
Farage’s past statements praising Putin and criticizing Western policies toward Russia have fueled suspicions of his sympathies towards the Russian leader. Despite attempts to clarify his position on Putin’s actions in Ukraine, Farage continues to face accusations of being apologetic towards Putin’s regime. The unfolding scandal involving Gill has further compounded the challenges for Farage and the Reform Party amidst growing accusations of Russian influence.
