A celebrated jockey narrowly escaped death when her pelvis was severely injured by a falling horse. Sonja Logan, in 2023, was targeted by a group of assailants during a car theft attempt. She suffered multiple injuries, including a broken nose, cut lip, and fractured teeth just weeks before her wedding. The culprits fled when the alarm was raised, evading capture. Recounting the harrowing experience, Logan described the excruciating pain of being trapped under a half-ton racehorse as the most intense she had ever felt.
The incident occurred while Logan was riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her husband Tommy, who had been victorious in their previous races together. The horse became agitated and caused Logan to fall when it reared up at the starting gate, subsequently landing on her and crushing her pelvis. Emergency responders provided immediate aid, and Logan was quickly transported to Darwin Royal Hospital before being transferred to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized care due to the severity of her injuries.
Following extensive surgical intervention, including the insertion of screws and a plate to stabilize her hip, Logan expressed gratitude for surviving the traumatic incident. She emphasized the severity of the pain she endured, ranking it as the most agonizing experience of her life. Despite the challenges, Logan is currently recovering at home with the aid of a walking frame.
Looking ahead, Logan anticipates a six to eight-month recovery period, with a focus on rehabilitation to resume her career as a jockey. Despite facing adversity in the past, including a previous assault and carjacking incident, Logan has demonstrated resilience by returning to competitive horse riding and achieving notable successes in racing competitions. She also found solace in competitive bodybuilding, which helped her overcome mental health struggles and anxiety.
Acknowledging the unwavering support of her loved ones, particularly her husband Tommy, Logan remains optimistic about her future in horse racing. Grateful for the compassion and assistance she has received, Logan credits her strong support network for aiding her through challenging times.
