“Hurricane Mellissa’s Toll: 80 Dead, $48-52B in Damage”

The death toll from Hurricane Mellissa has climbed to 80 following the onslaught of the category five hurricane that struck the Caribbean, leaving behind a trail of death and devastation. The hurricane hit Jamaica on October 28 with winds reaching 185mph, causing significant damage to infrastructure, destroying roofs, and flooding streets. As a result, 72% of Jamaicans were left without power, and some areas became inaccessible due to debris blocking roads.

The hurricane’s impact extended across the Caribbean, claiming lives in various countries, including 32 in Jamaica, 43 in Haiti, four in the Dominican Republic, and one in Cuba. The death toll is expected to rise as recovery operations progress. The farming regions of Jamaica, already reeling from the effects of Hurricane Beryl the previous year, were severely hit by Hurricane Mellissa. Authorities anticipate a rise in food prices and disruptions to key industries like tourism.

Estimates by US forecaster AccuWeather suggest that Hurricane Mellissa caused damages ranging from $48 billion to $52 billion across the Caribbean. In Jamaica alone, data analytics firm Verisk estimated insured losses between $2.2 billion and $4.2 billion. Local Jamaican Councillor Kenord Grant highlighted the ongoing challenges Jamaica faces during the recovery process in the aftermath of the hurricane.

Expressing condolences for the hardest-hit region of St Elizabeth, Councillor Grant emphasized the need to quickly restore agricultural activities to mitigate economic repercussions. He warned of potential damage to various sectors of the Jamaican economy, particularly in areas like community tourism and popular tourist destinations such as Montego Bay and St. Ann.

Councillor Grant emphasized a united effort between political parties to rebuild Jamaica post-disaster. Both the People’s National Party and the Jamaican Labour Party are committed to the restoration process. The People’s National Party aims to ensure integrity in the rebuilding efforts.

For those willing to support Jamaica’s recovery, the Jamaican government has launched a disaster relief website, supportjamaica.gov.jm, where donations can be made directly to aid relief efforts.
