Harry Skelton was visibly moved as Grey Dawning triumphed in the prestigious £200,000 Betfair Chase at Haydock, described as a ‘magic’ performance. The race on Saturday evolved into a thrilling duel up the straight between last year’s top two contenders, with Handstands also in contention.
Grey Dawning, previously bested by Royale Pagaille a year ago, dominated the race in the final stretch, pulling ahead by two-and-three-quarter lengths against the former victor. Skelton, emotionally charged by the victory, expressed his gratitude for the exceptional training efforts of Clare, Tom Messenger, and his team, especially noting their dedication in preparing Grey Dawning for the race.
Reflecting on the win, Skelton shared, “Last year didn’t go as planned due to unfavorable conditions, but today he was outstanding. Clare and Tom, who diligently care for him daily, ensured he was in peak condition for me to enjoy this victory.”
Amidst the excitement, Skelton highlighted the recent birth of his daughter Anna, expressing immense pride in his wife Bridget and eagerly anticipating their reunion at home.
The substantial prize money of £113,870 from this triumph further solidified Dan Skelton’s position as the top trainer, leading with over £1.2 million in earnings since April. He lauded Grey Dawning’s exceptional performance, remarking on the delayed but gratifying victory they had anticipated from the previous year’s disappointment.
Expressing his admiration for the supportive owner Robert Kirkland, Skelton acknowledged the significance of owners in the sport and the joy of delivering successful moments to them. The emotional rollercoaster of the past 48 hours for Skelton added depth to the victory, emphasizing the teamwork and dedication that culminated in the breathtaking win.
