Former England Cricketer Tony Pigott Dies at 67

Former England cricketer Tony Pigott, known for his impressive career with over 1,000 wickets, has passed away at 67. Pigott, a former Sussex seam bowler, succumbed to a heart attack after battling oesophageal cancer. His legacy includes a notable performance in the County Championship and a memorable appearance for England, which became a cricket folklore moment.

In 1984, Pigott received a sudden call-up to play for England against New Zealand in Christchurch, despite having wedding plans during the series. Postponing his wedding, Pigott flew to New Zealand and managed to secure two wickets in the match. However, his debut was overshadowed by England’s loss to New Zealand.

Following his international stint, Pigott spent 18 years at Sussex before moving to Surrey in 1994 due to recurring injuries. Eventually, he returned to Sussex in 1997, leading a successful takeover and eventually becoming the CEO. Pigott played a pivotal role in Sussex’s triumph in the County Championship in 2003 and was instrumental in installing floodlights at Hove Ground, a first in the UK.

Tributes have poured in for Pigott following his demise. Former Sussex captain Chris Adams praised Pigott for his transformative impact on the club, crediting him for shaping his own career. Pigott, affectionately called ‘Lester,’ was remembered as a positive and influential figure in Sussex cricket history.

In addition, ex-Sussex wicket-keeper Ian Gould and others in the cricket community expressed their sorrow over Pigott’s passing. Pigott’s contributions to Sussex cricket and his lasting legacy in the sport have left a profound impact on those who knew him.
