A devastating tragedy struck a firefighter when he arrived at the site of a car accident only to discover that the victim was his own son.
The incident occurred in the early hours of October 26 on Baldu-L’Agnata road in Tempio Pausania, Italy. Omar Masia, 25, was traveling with four friends in a BMW when the vehicle veered off the road, crashed through the rusty metal railings of Baldu Bridge, and plunged 10 meters into a dry riverbed below, landing upside down. Omar, who was sitting in the back seat, was fatally crushed when the roof collapsed, leading to his immediate death.
The emergency services, summoned by the surviving passengers, found Omar’s father, Massimiliano Masia, among the first responders to discover his son’s lifeless body at the scene. The driver and another passenger managed to escape the wreck, albeit with injuries, and had to hike to a nearby residence to seek help due to the lack of cell service or passing vehicles.
Upon reaching the accident site, Massimiliano identified some of his son’s companions. Tragically, he learned that Omar was trapped in the car, and despite efforts to resuscitate him, they were unsuccessful. The surviving passengers were hospitalized, with one already discharged and reported to be recovering well.
Omar, a resident of Calangianus, worked as an electrician. Antonio Giordano of the Sassari Fire Brigade expressed that Mr. Masia suffered an unimaginable emotional wound while responding to the accident that claimed his son’s life.
The cause of the BMW swerving before the fatal crash remains unconfirmed. The driver, who tested slightly above the legal alcohol limit, faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving. The incident has prompted authorities to investigate the poor road conditions in the vicinity of the accident site and assess other bridges in the area.
