A young girl was left in a perilous situation on a cold mountain by her father, who was subsequently charged with multiple counts of child abuse. Micah Smith, 31, took his three children, aged two, four, and eight, on a challenging hike on October 11. Despite pleas from the children to turn back, Smith continued up the mountain, endangering their lives.
Smith had claimed the hike would be a 9-mile or 9-hour expedition, but the trail was actually a five-mile round trip with a steep elevation change. Despite bringing some supplies, including food and water, the children became exhausted and cold as the hike progressed. Smith ignored their pleas to turn back, insisting it was a “once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
As a storm approached and conditions worsened, the children became increasingly distressed. Smith’s daughter begged him to take them back to safety, but he refused, leading to a harrowing night on the mountain. The children were eventually found by rescuers, with the two younger ones in critical condition. The four-year-old even suffered a stroke and had to undergo surgery.
Smith’s questionable behavior continued post-rescue, with incidents involving suicidal intentions and tampering with hospital equipment. These actions paint a troubling picture of neglect and endangerment towards his children. Smith’s disregard for their safety has rightfully led to legal consequences, highlighting the importance of responsible parenting and outdoor preparedness.
