The Deputy Labour Leader has strongly criticized the dissemination of negative personal information as “completely inappropriate.” Amid a recent surge of internal briefings regarding Keir Starmer’s leadership, Lucy Powell emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in the political landscape. Powell, who was removed from her position as Commons leader by the Prime Minister, expressed concern over the damaging impact of such behaviors on the political realm. She underscored the necessity for a cultural overhaul to address the issue and hold individuals accountable for their actions.
Powell also pointed out a potential gender bias in the negative briefings she faced during the deputy leadership election, where she triumphed over Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson. Reflecting on her dismissal, the Manchester Central MP revealed her apprehension upon learning about the challenges encountered by Angela Rayner related to stamp duty.
Recounting the phone call that marked her departure, Powell admitted to sensing the imminent outcome due to her outspokenness on certain matters. Despite feeling that she had performed well in her role, she believed her termination was unjustified based on the reasons presented.
After a month as Deputy Leader, Powell noted that she now possesses a better understanding of public priorities. She acknowledged a disconnect between the Labour Party’s values and government actions, stressing the importance of aligning policies with core Labour principles. Emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to governance, Powell highlighted the significance of effective border control and immigration management as integral components of governmental responsibilities.
