In a heartfelt conclusion, the well-known avian romance that captivated audiences worldwide has reached its end. Jackie, one part of a bald eagle duo whose existence and parental challenges drew millions of viewers via a live camera feed in Southern California’s Big Bear Valley, passed away on Monday following an extended period of medical care.
The Ojai Raptor Center, where Jackie was under treatment, shared the news of her passing on Instagram. At 14 years old, Jackie’s health had been steadily deteriorating despite the dedicated efforts of the veterinary team and specialists at the center.
The loss of Jackie has sparked an outpouring of affection from fans who followed her journey. Many expressed their deep connection with Jackie, acknowledging her as a symbol of love, loyalty, and resilience. Fans reminisced about watching Jackie and her partner, Shadow, nurture their offspring via the 24/7 live stream operated by the advocacy group Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV).
The narrative of Jackie dates back to 2012 when she was believed to be the first eaglet born in Big Bear Valley. FOBBV introduced the bald eagle nest camera in 2015, with Jackie and her then-partner, Mr. B, making their debut appearance in 2017. Following Mr. B’s departure, Shadow emerged as Jackie’s new mate, leading to their shared spotlight in 2023 during a snowstorm that tested their commitment to incubating eggs.
Even though Jackie’s presence on the nest cameras has ceased, her legacy endures. FOBBV recently secured $10 million US to preserve the 63-acre habitat where Jackie and Shadow resided, thwarting a proposed luxury housing development. This conservation success story highlights the impact of dedicated fans who donated to protect the eagles’ environment.
While Bald Eagles were once endangered in the U.S., conservation efforts have since removed them from the endangered species list in 2007. FOBBV continues to provide updates on the remaining eagles in the region, including Sandy and Luna, the last offspring of Jackie and Shadow, who were last observed on camera in July.
Shadow’s unwavering loyalty to his nest and territory following Jackie’s medical treatment was noted by FOBBV. However, a new female eagle, known as KD-1, has been sighted near the nest, hinting at the possibility of love rekindling after loss. This development signals hope for the future of the eagle community in Big Bear Valley.
