“UK Broadband Report: Alt-Nets Outshine Major Providers”

A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study highlights that many smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing industry giants by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value for money.

The research indicates that issues with internet connections have become commonplace, with frequent dropouts being the primary complaint. Slow download speeds and service interruptions also feature prominently among consumer grievances.

An overwhelming 91% of broadband users reported facing issues with their internet service in the past year, indicating that less than one in ten households had a trouble-free connection experience.

Among the leading providers, Sky ranked poorly in addressing frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers encountering this issue. Although the problems were promptly resolved, they still caused inconvenience, especially for those working remotely or streaming content.

Virgin Media also performed inadequately, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium rates for broadband services. Additionally, around 25% of Virgin customers expressed dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.

Sky users expressed discontent with the broadband speed as well, with nearly one in three customers deeming it insufficient.

Other underperforming providers include TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service, which received low ratings from customers.

On the bright side, many smaller UK providers continue to excel. Zen Internet stood out as one of the top performers, receiving fewer reliability complaints compared to major brands. Community Fibre and Hyperoptic also garnered positive feedback.

Among the larger providers, Plusnet distinguished itself by outperforming competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

These findings align with previous research from Which?, consistently showing that smaller broadband companies outshine major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money.

Which? now encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service. The Ofcom broadband checker offers a convenient way to assess available broadband options.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized ongoing investments to enhance services, citing official data from Ofcom and independent rankings that position Virgin Media as a top broadband provider in various categories.

For those seeking reliable broadband, the message is clear: explore alternative providers and exercise consumer power to switch to better services.
