“UK Couple Abandons Flight Over Nut Allergy Neglect”

A couple from the UK had to abandon their flight and miss their vacation after airline staff allegedly disregarded their nut allergies. Pretoria Drever and Rhonan Kelly claimed that despite informing KLM flight attendants about their airborne allergies, the crew continued serving almond-topped cakes. Feeling helpless, the couple made the difficult decision to leave the plane, forfeiting their trip to Amsterdam planned for Rhonan’s 25th birthday.

KLM responded, stating that they cannot prevent other passengers from consuming nut-containing products during flights. While the airline does make announcements requesting passengers to refrain from opening such items, they cannot ensure a nut-free environment onboard.

The incident at Edinburgh Airport on October 25 left the couple feeling cornered, prompting them to exit the aircraft. Rhonan expressed feeling discriminated against and feared a potential emergency due to the airline’s refusal to address their concerns about nut products being sold on the flight.

The couple, who hope to receive a refund from KLM, disclosed that they had informed the airline about their nut allergies in advance and had arrived early at the airport to notify staff. The distressing experience has left them apprehensive about flying in the future.

Pretoria, susceptible to anaphylactic shock within minutes of nut exposure, emphasized the anxiety and humiliation she experienced during the ordeal. The couple felt isolated and neglected, emphasizing the airline’s disregard for their safety.

KLM expressed regret over the couple’s ordeal, acknowledging the seriousness of nut allergies and the distress caused. While the airline strives to support passengers with allergies, they reiterated the limitations in ensuring a nut-free environment onboard. More information on dietary options can be found on KLM’s website.

The incident sheds light on the challenges faced by travelers with severe allergies and underscores the importance of airlines catering to the safety and well-being of all passengers.
