Brazilian authorities have apprehended a 22-year-old escort suspected of using drugs to rob tourists, including numerous foreigners. The arrest of Cláudio Rafael Silva de Queiroz de Pontes was confirmed by police officers from the Special Tourist Support Police Station (DEAT) and Ipanema’s 13th Precinct. Cláudio, who allegedly masqueraded as a male escort, was wanted for robbery and criminal association. He was captured in Cabo Frio, a coastal town in Rio’s Lakes Region.
According to police, Cláudio was part of a criminal group that preyed on tourists, especially homosexual men, by enticing them through dating apps for meetings at beaches or bars. The victims were reportedly drugged with spiked drinks, leading to theft of their belongings, cash, and unauthorized bank transactions. Three accomplices, two men, and a woman are currently evading law enforcement.
In one incident in May, a Mexican tourist met Cláudio via a dating app and was later found disoriented after being drugged at Ipanema Beach. Subsequently, an Italian visitor fell victim to a similar scheme in June, losing a substantial amount of money. In August, two Chilean tourists were also targeted, facing financial losses. Another ongoing investigation involves a man from Pernambuco who lost valuables after socializing with a gang member.
Detective Patrícia Alemany of DEAT mentioned that the gang deliberately targeted perceived affluent individuals, often foreigners or older men. The group utilized their appearance to attract victims, assessing their financial status before carrying out the crimes.
Authorities are actively pursuing the remaining suspects. Cláudio is being held at the José Frederico Marques Public Prison, awaiting a custody hearing. Details of his statement have not been disclosed, and his legal representatives have not been reached for comment.
