A woman with a 5-month-old baby was saved from the East River in New York City by retired police officers who acted swiftly. The incident occurred on a Sunday morning when the woman entered the river with the child up to neck-level.
The ex-cops, Kevin O’Donnell and Paul Pinsdorf, were assisting at a local event when they heard cries for help and rushed to the scene. Pinsdorf, a 20-year police veteran, immediately entered the water to rescue the woman and baby as O’Donnell called for emergency assistance.
Pinsdorf had to struggle to bring the woman and child to safety as the woman resisted his efforts. Eventually, with Pinsdorf’s quick action, both were successfully rescued from the water. O’Donnell praised Pinsdorf as a hero for his courageous act.
Despite facing challenges such as a language barrier, the officers managed to bring the woman and baby ashore where they were promptly attended to by EMS and NYPD responders. The woman was taken to North Shore University Hospital, and the baby was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital.
The NYPD is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the relationship between the woman and the baby and the reasons behind her actions.
