“MPs Criticized for Absence During Immigration Announcement”

Shabana Mahmood criticized the absence of Reform UK’s MPs during a significant immigration announcement, labeling their pledges as “un-British.” The Home Secretary revealed extensive changes to settlement regulations, emphasizing a system that rewards compliance with immigration rules. Notably, Nigel Farage and his colleagues were notably absent from the parliamentary session where the proposals were discussed.

Mahmood advocated for an increase in the residency requirement before individuals can seek permanent settlement, contrasting Reform UK’s stance on applying changes retroactively to settled status holders, which she deemed as contrary to British values. She emphasized the importance of honoring promises made to long-standing residents and highlighted the principles of fairness as fundamental British values.

The proposal aims to extend the qualifying period for permanent settlement to between 10 and 15 years, a significant shift from the current five-year requirement. The Home Secretary emphasized that the new measures aim to incentivize contributions to the economy and adherence to immigration regulations. The plan includes provisions for fast-tracking certain categories of individuals, such as skilled public sector workers, entrepreneurs, and high earners, while others may face extended waiting periods.

Critics raised concerns about the potential impact on vulnerable groups, including those arriving on small boats or relying on benefits, who may face waiting periods of 20 to 30 years before being eligible for permanent settlement. This raised alarms about the potential long-term instability and stress faced by individuals fleeing war and persecution.

In her address to MPs, Mahmood stressed the importance of managing migration effectively to prevent the proliferation of hate and division. She expressed her love for the country that welcomed her parents decades ago but highlighted the challenges posed by rapid demographic changes. The proposed rules are expected to impact around two million individuals who arrived post-2021, excluding those already holding settled status.
