A cruise scheduled to embark on a 60-day voyage around Australia was abruptly cancelled after an elderly woman was discovered dead on a remote island. Suzanne Rees, an 80-year-old tourist, went missing during a stop at Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Despite being part of an organized hike, she became separated from the group due to illness. Tragically, she was left behind on the island by the cruise ship, leading to her untimely death.
The decision to cancel the remainder of the voyage was announced to passengers by Coral Expeditions’ CEO, Mark Fifield, citing the “tragic passing of Suzanne Rees and previous mechanical issues.” The family of the deceased expressed outrage over the lack of proper care and oversight by the cruise operator.
Following the discovery of Ms. Rees’ body on Lizard Island, a multi-agency investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances that led to her abandonment. Coral Expeditions has pledged full refunds to all passengers and is arranging their return via chartered flights. Additionally, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority has prohibited new boarding on the Coral Adventurer pending further inquiries.
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have stated that the death is being treated as sudden and non-suspicious. The local police are cooperating with the probe, and a report is being prepared for the coroner. Coral Expeditions’ CEO expressed deep regret over the incident and assured full support to the bereaved family, emphasizing their cooperation with the authorities during the investigation process.
